Clancy Blackburn sat at the helm of the table, surrounded by portraits of Blackburns and the soft shadows of torchlight along the walls. The table was long, as were the ones beside it. There were six in total, two to a row, filling the large dining hall. Jack Blackburn loomed at him in oil paint over the far door, but Clancy drank his absinthe silently, glaring with boredom towards his grandfather.
His wife wasn't at the table. His daughter was in the kitchen. The only people there were the children, who had settled a few minutes prior, and a light chatter came over. He could only wait for the food to be out, and watch them all converse. So many children, so many otherwise hopeless lives. So many people using his machine.
Some still had it on, too hungry to remember to remove it. Copper wires coiled up their arms, attaching ring to the powerpack on their wrist, powerpack to the touchpad on their forearm. Did they know the power of what they had on? Did they ever think to thank him for saving them?
He sipped his absinthe. The portraits blurred with color.
The doors to the kitchen opened, and a young woman began placing plates before the children.

The plate was placed before her with a soft, dejected clank, the labored grunts of the Blackburn cook making up a greeting behind her. Rory didn't say thank you. She stared and stared at the slop meat before her, some kind of chicken or duck drenched in chunks of gravy, and she did not feel inclined to eat it. The sound of chatter ebbed and flowed around her, conducive with the lady passing around meals, but when its tide came forward, she did not join it.
She picked up a fork and ate.

♔The food was taking it's usual merry time to arrive, Megami noted, keeping a dignified posture at the table, her back stiff and her legs crossed, bobbing back and forth without her giving it much thought. From her usual spot at the dinner table, a seat towards the other end from the sombre Blackburn, she could just make out his face, oddly similar to the painting looming overhead. The same brushes of dark color under the eyes. It unsettled her, but since she found no interest involving herself in the idle chit-chat of the other kids, it was hard to tear her eyes off of him, but her growing headache sure did.
The heaviness of the air and the yellowish lights did nothing to soothe her nerves as she began fiddling with the fork that had already been laid out in front of her, as well as the rest of the cutlery. It was always a good idea to find something to distract herself with in these situations, but loud chatter and a grumbling stomach combined could easily defeat her futile attempt at control. She was on the verge of bending the small, weak object when the cook finally showed up. For all of her impatience, the food was a disappointment, but at least it satisfied her for a while. Sticking the undamaged fork in a piece of meat, she allowed herself to once more tune out. coded by pinn @ thq

One of the youngest sat closer towards Clancy's chair, she waited calmly for her dinner, legs swinging under the chair and teddy bear perched on her lap. Catalina--unlike the others around the table-- was not troubled in the slightest. The girl took pride in that, she was normal. Which was what not a lot of the kids there could say. She had a family too, another thing she liked to brag about. So when it came to meals around the table, the girl couldn't help a snobbish look. Cat didn't care, after all. She only talked to those who interested her. As such, the dignified posture of Megami got her. Shamelessly, Catalina stared.
It was only until dinner came out that she broke her unending stare. Only to look down at her food and back again to the older girl. Of course, she had seen many of these kids before. But chooses her interests one at a time. Blond hair flicked over her shoulder as she gazed over at Megami, becoming more and more amused of the girl. Suppressing a smile, the girl took a pea on her spoon and discretely launched it at the girl, sparing a moment of a glance at her grandfather to make sure he wasn't looking at her. With a minute effort, she looked down at her plate and continued to eat. The snarky smile was hidden under a ginormous bite of mashed potatoes.

What you looking at?

The food was placed before him. He quietly thanked the lady and began to stare at the food. He tried to figure out what it's suppose to be. A steak, a duck? All he knew it was a big piece of meat and gravy. He looked at the others, who have already begun eating. He began to question on whether or not to completely trust this place and the people that live here. He then got a tiny flashback of the incident. He shook his head, forgets what he just thought about, and ate.

◄ HAVEN'T YOU HEARD WHAT BECOMES OF CURIOUS MINDS? It was rare to see this hunched figure around all of the other children. They were mostly concealed from view, a teen with longer, slim hands that were picking apart the grout on the floor, a quizzical smile plastered on their face. Peeking from underneath the tablecloth that was draping from the table, they would occasionally show some bit of dirt or a bug to the doll-like Catalina. Her reactions appeared to be greatly enjoyed by the unusual character, who seemed to be living without a care for germs or the creepy-crawlies they were brandishing like a gift. A nudge in the ribs made the child lose their peace. Turning around still under the table, they were close to the point of attacking what turned out to be the well-cleaned shoe of Clancy Blackburn. Ah, yes, it was time, they realized, a warm smell calling them from their safehouse. They light was hurtful for their eyes after such a long time in vague darkness, but the food was more important. Helping themselves with their hands, wrapped in dirty bandages begging for a change, Wren pulled themselves up and plopped back down on one of the chairs, smiling at their sister meekly. She was taking interest in a particular lass, but all Wren could said was that they dug her hair color. But that was soon out of their mind when the food was set, and they soon began to stuff their mouth, using "nature's cutlery" to do the job no fork was good enough to. Using on hand to bring in a helping amount of peas in their gaping mouth, Wren stuck the other one of their sister's plate, helping themselves to her mashed potatoes. It was rare for them to be treated. Maybe grandpa would offer some of their funny-smelling liquid too. Cat Blackburn

A fork, a spoon, a plate, an instrument. Well, weren't they all instruments? Delicate fingers traced each, fingering the fork, then the small recorder, then the fork again, deliberating which to pick up. And finally, she settled on the fork, and took a stab at the meat before her.
She looked up at the boy before her, a dark haired one. He seemed about her age. She recognized him well, but never talked to him.
It was as if he were a mountain, the way she looked at him, but she smiled earnestly when their eyes met. He ate, and she didn't see him die, so she took a bite as well. It is vile, the mundanity in it. It slugged down her esophagus like a bad sewage clog.

Erina simply stared at the plate placed in front of her. The meal on the plate was strangely enticing... Something about the gravy, and the, uh, meat, and such. Erina carefully picked up her shoddy fork, and took a tittle of the meat.
"What a peculiar flavor."

Clancy kicked the child under the table. "Get out, you wretch," he hissed, a stray cat's tongue gurgling in his mouth as he kicked again, the second time at air. He didn't want to make a scene. He had to hold his anger and spit in whispers. He didn't want to look under the table. He was scared at how much horrible the abysinthe would make the child's face.
Rather, he stood. He had been planning on waiting, but he needed to occupy himself.
"Children," he said, his voice low, like cold dew beneath a garden bed. "I do believe this is a special dinner. The last one was found, and thus I must give you the location of your newest marble." His eyes were gluey to each of the children, but oddly, when he stared at them, there was a cool disconnect, as if he were blind. He cleared his throat in a disruptive hack.
"It will be in the Alpha Dimension," he said, waiting for a few children to still quiet down. "A woman named Shen is selling it in her store by Aka Square as a space rock."
He paused and deliberated something, the creases in his forehead folding like origami paper.
"She is a nice lady," he continued, "But I will not give you the money to pay for it. It is too expensive for our institution."
Clancy unfurled his cuff and grabbed his cup, more of a chalice than anything. "The first person to retrieve this marble gets a reward. As it is every time."
With that, he sat.
