Talie paused at the staircase to the market, her recorder clasped in her fist. Around her, the city rushed, but a wall seemed to form where she lingered. All she could see below was darkness, silent, nocturnal darkness. It looked abandoned, but she hopped down the stairs without much more hesitation, entering the underbelly of Broadripple.
There was a dripping. No matter how far she got, she could hear it all around her, the whistling of a pipe under the steady tink tink of a leak. It was funny. The city thrived on water. Water was power, and power was scarce. Even in a place like Broadripple, water found itself wasting in the corners of absolute darkness.
Darkness. Darkness. Darkness. Talie felt the dank wall until it became soft wood, and she found herself in soft light. A booth selling fruits and vegetables was the first she saw. The old woman behind it, talking to a burly man with a white headband, stopped what he was saying to not to the girl. And Talie nodded back.
Further. Further. Further. The path got brighter, the path got cluttered. It was like a mall or pavilion, and the underground become a cozy niche of shouting vendors and lurking figures.
So many people. It didn't even scrape the congested population of Broadripple. These were the city degenerates. These were her people.
Where did Alan set up that week...?
