HAVEN'T YOU HEARD WHAT BECOMES OF CURIOUS MINDS?
It was over, the dinner concluded shortly after their grandfather's announcement. Obviously, there would have been no need to bring his grandchild along after all of these years to eat with the other children unless he wanted to say something important. But still, why order his most undesired relative to the table if they had no involvement with the task at hand? Their arms, they bore rashes, they bore needle marks and bandages, not the device that would allow those lowly orphans to be of use to Clancy. They had lost this privilege long ago.
See me in my office after you get your shots done, Wren. the old man had informed them in a curt and stoic manner, ignoring any sort of response they uttered quietly back. As much as they despised him, they were not to disobey him at any times. So away they went, taking a route to put them as far as they could be put from the others, dragging their feet towards the infirmary, where the more kindhearted woman, Mercy Blackburn, awaited them with a patient smile. Seeing her always made their day just a tad bit better, but today the worry gnawing at their insides was more powerful. There was a brief exchange of polite words before the green-haired child once more set off, this time with fresh bandages and a clearer head. The medicine was working it's way through their blood, bringing just a bit of strength to their bony frame. Off to Clancy Blackburn's office they went.
"You wanted to see me? Oh wait, you never want to see me, pops."
"Quit it. I called you here for a good reason, trust me, I don't like seeing you one bit. But you've grown healthier over the years. It's time that you repay me for keeping you alive this long, you pitiful creature. Your bounding device. It's in your room. Go and make yourself useful. And if you dare double cross me... we both know what's going to happen." the man explained, sounding annoyed. One hand was stroking one of those white rabbits that he was so fond of, trembling in his lap.
"As you wish." Wren responded slyly, a grin of satisfaction blooming on their face. Finally, it was their time to return within those that had a reason to their life. They turned on their heels, ready to leave the room at once. Closing the door, they heard a hiss escape from their grandfather.
"It's the last thing I wish for."
